Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
